FLIGHT: Alberta's Early Learning and Care Framework

The Alberta Early Learning and Care curriculum, FLIGHT, guides our practice. This curriculum framework is intended to guide the practice of early learning care educators working with children and their families in centre-based child care and family day home settings. This is a flexible framework for thinking about how children learn and experience their worlds, as well as a guide that fosters strong early childhood communities.

Children’s play is central to this curriculu m framework. It is an active, exploratory, creative, expressive process, deeply embedded in children’s everyday experiences and through which children participate in, learn about, and actively make sense of the world.

FLIGHT
Framework

Written in 2014, FLIGHT is Alberta’s Early Learning and Care Framework. “In early childhood, curriculum is based on holistic goals for young children rather than specific outcomes for each subject area.” (Makovichuk et al., 2014, p. 4).

ICFC has been involved as a pilot centre for the framework since the fall of 2014 and works at implementing its concepts in their work with children and families.

Our Environment

Our playroom environments are inspired by the cultural backgrounds of educators, children, and families.  Our goal is to stimulate a child's creativity at the same time as introducing them to different cultural experiences. Our playrooms are filled with loose parts, cultural artifacts, and natural materials that foster exploration.
